Natural Gas

VW Passat FSI Natural Gas Car

Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is natural gas under pressure which remains clear, odorless, and non-corrosive. It may be used as an alternative fuel for vehicles, providing lots of advantages both for the owner and the environment. Natural gas vehicles perform an average reduction in ozone-forming emissions of 80 percent compared to gasoline vehicles. In spite of its combustion does produce greenhouse gases, it is a more environmentally safe alternative to those fuels, and it is much safer than other fuels

CNG vehicles have been introduced in a wide variety of commercial applications, from light-duty trucks and sedans like taxi cabs to medium-duty trucks like delivery vans and postal vehicles, to heavy-duty vehicles like transit buses, street sweepers and school buses.

One of the major advantages of using compressed natural gas is a valuable reduction in emissions in comparison with gasoline. Compressed natural gas is touted as the “cleanest burning” alternative fuel available, because the easiness of the methane molecule reduces tailpipe emissions of different contaminants up to 95%. Not quite as dramatic is the reduction in net greenhouse-gas emissions, which is about the same as corn-grain ethanol at about a 20% reduction over gasoline.

Most regular cars may be converted for using natural gas by ripping out the entire fuel system currently installed in the vehicle and adding the new system. This requires a few cables and a couple of tanks. One option when you convert your car to natural gas is to provide your own fueling option at home. There are home refueling devices you can invest in. Most of these devices will require you to obtain a special permit in order for you to install. However, these devices provide total convenience because you can refuel your vehicle every morning before you leave for work.
